Kenny, a year older than Tyler, had just told us about his first day of kindergarten when Tyler looked up at me and asked…

(I’m guessing since you read the title, you already know where this is going!)

“Mommy, next year will I go to tylergarten?”

We smile. Kids – especially our own – say the cutest things. But there is a lesson here. Children interpret our words within their frame of reference. Sometimes what they understand is delightfully funny and easily explained. Sometimes their misunderstanding can bring ridicule from careless adults.

We cannot know or correct every remark our little ones mis-hear but we can guard our words and our responses to their questions.

To paraphrase Maya Angelou:

My child may forget what I say but he will remember how I made him feel.

By our words and actions, may our children – whatever their age – know in the core of their being they are of priceless value. Amen?

Amen.
